Our History
Tyger Baptist Church is one of the oldest church in the Three Rivers Baptist Association. The church was officially organized in 1800, the first meeting was held on July 21 of that year. It is not clear where the original site was located. In 1838 the church was moved to its present location one mile east of Tigerville, SC.
In 1838 the State of South Caroline deeded a six acre "Plantation or tract of land" to the deacons of Tyger Baptist Church, which was known at that time as the Tyger Meeting House. A large stone at the top of the hill, above the cemetery, is one of the original cornerstones of the church
Around 1901 the church considered moving to Tigerville where a high school had just begun. That school is now North Greenville University. In 1902, the church voted to move but the action was rescinded in 1908.
The present building was rededicated and remodeled in 1948. In the mid 1970's the educational building, including the fellowship hall, was build as an addition to the rear of the church. The front of the church and sanctuary was completely remodeled as well as the front entry in 1982.
